Iola’s Ward 3 voters will winnow a field of four candidates to two in Tuesday’s primary election for City Council.

The ward encompasses those living west of Cottonwood and south of Breckenridge streets.

Candidates include incumbent Kim Peterson, who was appointed in January to fill the unexpired term of Michael Middleton. The other three are Josiah D’Albini, Kyle King and Ashley Varner. The top two vote-getters will advance to the November general election.

The Ward 3 vote is the only race this year in Allen County that warrants a primary vote.

In contrast, Ward 4 (southeast Iola) has two candidates, Steven French and Ben Alexander. Ward 1 (northwest) has only one candidate, Nickolas Kinder. And Ward 2 (northeast) has no one on the ballot. That means voters in Ward 2 likely will choose their next elected representative by write-in.

Iola voters also will choose the community’s next mayor in November. Incumbent Jon Wells is being challenged by Councilman Ron Ballard and resident Larry Walden.

Polls on Tuesday are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the John Silas Bass North Community Building.
